When the envelope containing the $1,060 they had saved suddenly went missing, the couple went into full-out investigative mode!

Recalling the gut-wrenching moment, she said: "We just, for like five minutes, we just shuffled through it, not talking".

Digging through the trash and other places, the couple never expected to find the cash - which was inside of an envelope - in the shredder.

After careful and tearful consideration, the couple realized their son Leo had shredded the envelope.

Jackee found the money following a frantic search.

Ben Belnap said he and his wife started house when Jackee hollered, "I found it".

Their 2-year-old son, Leo, had used the shredder in the past under his parents' supervision, they told KSL.

The entire kitchen table was covered in shredded money! "She's holding the shredder and she says, 'I think the money is in here'". "We didn't know what to do and then I broke the silence and I'm like, 'Well, this will make a great wedding story one day'".

"Honestly in my heart, I said some day this is going to be really amusing", Ben agreed, adding that most parents only have to deal with their kids drawing on their walls. The process could take up to two years.

The couple said Leo is now banned from going near the shredder.

Thankfully a government office that specializes in dealing with mutilated cash gave them their money back.

While the family hopes that the United States Department of Treasury can refund at least some of their shredded currency, for now they are taking the long view.

'Your money is important, ' the agency said on their website.

Surprisingly, they may be able to salvage the ruined money after all - there's a USA government agency that specialises in mutilated cash.
