Apple to lock MacBook and iMac Pro from third-party repairs

Apple's T2 chip makes third-party Mac repairs impossible

The Apple Service Toolkit 2 software is only available to Apple employees and those working at Apple-authorized repairers, meaning users can not fix their own hardware or use third-party shops in order to get a fix at a cheaper price.

Specifically, Motherboard reports that the documents list which kinds of MacBook Pro and iMac Pro repairs require this configuration software to be run afterward. The software lock is enabled for MacBook Pro repairs relating to the logic board, display assembly, case (which includes the keyboard, trackpad, and related housing), and Touch ID board. For the most part, that's really only affected the mobile side of Apple.

"Two things bother me the most about Apple: one, that the service is really costly", says Aqil Kallangodan, a MacBook Pro user in Bangalore.

So, the new MacBook Pro 2018 Pro and iMac is equipped with a T2 chip, which has a system management controller, image processor, audio controller and an SSD controller.

Apple has implemented new proprietary software to diagnose MacBook Pro and iMac Pro.

According to internal documents acquired by Motherboard, which were sent to Apple authorized service center last month, the computers will need to run proprietary system configuration software by Apple after certain parts are replaced.

A separate internal training presentation obtained by Motherboard about how to use the diagnostics states that the "Apple Service Toolkit and Apple Service Toolkit 2 are available only to persons working at Apple-authorized service facilities".

Failure to run the software suite after the fix has been carried-out, according to the reports, will result in the unit "ceasing to function" (in other words, being bricked). This shouldn't come as a surprise, as Apple is actively lobbying against the movement, according to NY state public lobbying records that Motherboard has sourced. The tests are also different, depending on the Apple machine in question. It will only be unlocked if the Service Toolkit 2 is used by an Authorized Service Provider.

What do you think of Apple's latest moves? This essentially bars third-party repairs, and would also make it hard to fix said machines once they are classified as vintage machines.
