Interpol had said it had asked Beijing to clarify Meng's situation.

Interpol said Saturday it has made a formal request to China for information about the agency's missing president. It did not say why.

A brief statement from the Chinese anti-graft body said: "Public Security Ministry Vice Minister Meng Hongwei is now under investigation by the National Supervisory Commission for suspected violations of law".

Later on Sunday, China's highest anti-corruption agency, The National Supervisory Commission, released a statement confirming Meng was being held on suspicion of violating state law.

Meng's wife told reporters in the French city of Lyon on Sunday she hasn't heard from her husband since September 25.

That day, his wife said he sent a social media message telling her to "wait for my call", before sending a knife emoji signifying danger.

Mrs Meng urged national governments to intervene, saying she feared that her husband's life was in danger.

Asked if she believed that he has been arrested, Grace Meng said: "In China, what happened, I'm not sure". "For the husband whom I deeply love, for my young children, for the people of my motherland, for all the wives and children, so that their husbands and fathers will no longer disappear".

The Lyon-based worldwide police agency said it had used law enforcement channels to inquire with China about Meng's status.

The South China Morning Post, a newspaper known for its connections to China's government, itself reported that Meng had been detained for questioning by upon landing in China last week, and indicated he may have been the target of an ongoing anti-corruption campaign in the country - a campaign which Chinese president Xi Jinping has used to consolidate his power. Normally, they would be in daily contact when he was away working, she said.

He had been on a three-country tour, to Norway, Sweden and Serbia, for Interpol before his latest trip back to China, she said.

The term usually describes investigators in the ruling Communist Party who probe graft and political disloyalty.

As well as leading the International Criminal Police Organization as president, Meng is also a Chinese politician and former official from the Communist Party of China.

"Interpol's general secretariat looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the president's wellbeing".

She wouldn't speculate on her husband's current whereabouts.

"This matter belongs to the global community", Meng's wife told a press conference.
