City's last win at Anfield came all the way back in May 2003 but victory for the visitors today will see them move three points ahead of Jürgen Klopp's side in the race for the Premier League title.

As for Manchester City, they were the only Premier League side to register a victory in the Champions League midweek with a narrow 2-1 win over Hoffenheim.

City's team bus was attacked outside the stadium when it last visited the ground for a Champions League tie in April, with windows smashed as it was hit by missiles.

The game became a little more stretched after that, referee Martin Atkinson awarding a penalty after a Virgil van Dijk tackle on Leroy Sane.

The Belgium forward played down title talk at this early stage in the season.

Gerrard said: "We'd love Ibrox to be bouncing and rocking again".

City travel to Anfield this weekend in an eagerly anticipated early-season clash of the Premier League's top two sides.

Almost half of all City's defeats last season came against Klopp's team, including both legs of their Champions League quarter-final, while a 4-3 loss at Anfield ended their hopes of going a whole Premier League season unbeaten. We'll have a game behind closed doors to try and get some fitness into them lads and then we go again after the break.

"Kyle scored 19 goals for us last season, so we know just how much of a potent threat he is". The Welshman also provided a delightful chipped pass for Aubameyang to run to for Arsenal's fifth goal, underlining what a big loss he will be if, as expected, he leaves at the end of the season.

He said: "I thought they were sensational". We can't start slow and wait for the crowd to lift us.

"We're hoping the gap will be down to five points by full time".

Despite his team's struggles in domestic competitions, the Northern Irishman has excelled on a personal level, notching four goals in eight games.

Belgium playmaker Hazard scored the first and set up the third for substitute Alvaro Morata, while inbetween Ross Barkley claimed his first Chelsea goal.

Barkley's goal came via his knee from a few metres out and completed a memorable few days for the midfielder who has been recalled to the England squad for the forthcoming games against Croatia and Spain.

"I'm just playing good football because we are playing good football", he said. "I want to keep doing it and keep everyone happy". "It didn't look too serious, so there's a chance but we don't know". But we were really back on track, even after we had to change Millie which you never want to do, especially in the first half, so I am fine. One situation where you allow them a one-two and then are alone in front of the goalie, or are alone in the box and shoot the ball across the line and somebody scores an easy goal at the back post.
