Major Sponsors Worried About Rape Accusation Against Ronaldo

Attorney Leslie Stovall speaks during a news conference about rape allegations against football star Cristiano Ronaldo

On Thursday, Ronaldo was left out of Portugal's squad for their forthcoming matches against Poland and Scotland, although his national side offered a statement in support.

In reply, a spokesperson said that "We have seen the concerning report that details allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo".

Ronaldo dismissed the allegations on Twitter Wednesday.

Ronaldo, Portugal's record scorer and most-capped player, also missed Portugal's two games in September a friendly against Croatia and a Nations League match against Italy at his own request. The Portuguese footballer won the Champions League trophy a year ago but hinted at a move from the club after the game.

Ronaldo, a five-time world player of the year, now plays for Italian club Juventus.

Juventus shares fell 7 percent by 1425 GMT. Sports sites reported that jersey sales were a major boost for the club.

Meanwhile, his club is standing firmly behind him despite the allegations.

Other users labelled the posts "abhorrent" and called for them to apologise, while other replies defended the posts.

Ronaldo denied all accusations made by Kathryn Mayorga, who Spiegel Online report to have been silenced by the footballer when he allegedly raped her after in Las Vegas nearly ten years ago. She alleges that it happened after they met at a nightclub. The financial settlement was reportedly for $375,000.

United States sportswear firm Nike say they are "deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations" facing Cristiano Ronaldo. Consequently, she has gone public with her allegations against the football star.

Juventus coach Massimo Allegri says Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to play for the Serie A team against Udinese on Saturday.

Ronaldo moved from Real Madrid to Italian champions Juventus this summer for 100 million euros ($115.09 million). Sponsors have already stuck with Ronaldo even though he pleaded guilty in July to tax fraud in Spain and agreed to pay a fine of around $20 million. Share prices increased 180 percent shortly after the signing.

By close of markets on Friday they had dropped to 1.19 euro following a 9.92% drop on Friday alone.

Las Vegas police confirmed on Tuesday (2 October) that they had previously investigated a complaint in June 2009, but had no suspect in the case. EA has released a statement on those allegations, but nothing on removing the football star from the cover of its latest game.
