Laquan McDonald: Verdict reached in Chicago police shooting

Jason Van Dyke killed 17-year-old LaQuan McDonald on the 4100 blocks of South Pulaski Road in Chicago, Illinois on October 20, 2014. Judging by the video McDonald was actually trying to flee from the police, and upon arriving at the confrontation Dyke shot at the teenager and continued to do so even after he fell to the ground.

On Friday, a jury convicted the officer on one count of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm (one for each bullet fired).

"The school thought it was a threat so they pulled the daughter into the police room because not only did they start saying they're going to attack his daughter, they started passing out pictures so that all of these kids could figure out who was to attack", lead defense attorney, Daniel Herbert, said.

Van Dyke faced charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct after killing McDonald when responding to a report of someone breaking into vehicles. Chicago is preparing for protests.

A judge ordered police to release the dashcam footage in November 2015 after the Democratic city leader's administration fought to withhold the video for a year.

The Justice Department launched an investigation, concluding in a scathing report past year that the department violates the constitutional rights of residents. Emanuel later announced he would not seek a third term. He pointed to testimony from Van Dyke's partner that night, Joseph Walsh, who said he saw McDonald raise the knife, even though the video doesn't show that. He knew the stakes. McDonald was not moving toward the officers at all at the time of the shooting. The defence argued that he was not a murderer but a "scared police officer, fearful for his life and others and he acted within his training". Oliver was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Of the 96 officers charged in deadly on-duty shootings since 2005, 33 have been convicted of some crime as a result, according to Mr. Stinson's data.

Several cases in the past few years - including the shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Eric Garner in New York; Tamir Rice in Cleveland; and Freddie Gray in Baltimore - have ended in disappointment for many in the black community, as white officers have gone unpunished in their deaths. An officer with a Taser was just 25 seconds away.

The jury heard that the first police officers on the scene kept a distance from McDonald as he walked.

During the trial, Mr Van Dyke was still a member of the Chicago Police Department, though he was suspended without pay pending the outcome.

"They were killing before, and subsequently", Jackson said.

The organisation estimates that the borrowing will eventually cost Chicago taxpayers more than US$1 billion in interest for the life of the bonds. Yet, high-profile prosecutions are rare in the city despite its department being notoriously accused of corruption, especially with its interactions with residents of color. Protesters have gathered outside the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse every day of the three-week trial.

The McDonald case fueled a racially charged atmosphere in Chicago, and the city anticipated violence if the verdict had gone the other way.

Officials in Chicago had braced for potential unrest after the verdict, especially if jurors found Van Dyke not guilty.

No arrests have been made, said Officer Jessica Rocco, a police spokeswoman.
