Pep Guardiola confirms shock team news ahead of Liverpool clash

Guardiola says his team are not built to defend with men behind the ball

Guardiola says his team are not built to defend with men behind the ball

Riyad Mahrez took one of the worst penalties in recent memory at Anfield and some say the ball is till travelling as we speak.

City had the ideal opportunity to end their bad run at Anfield but Mahrez, not particularly reliable from the spot, blazed his effort high into the stand.

On the City side of things, Sergio Aguero has been passed fit, and is [2.22], but bear in mind he has never scored at Anfield in 11 attempts for City and Atletico Madrid.

Klopp, though, was happy with Liverpool's performance against City.

Manchester City now sits second in the Premier League standings with 19 points, but third-place Liverpool has earned just as many points and only trails its rival by a six-goal differential. "He (Salah) is younger and it was his first year back in England since his time at Chelsea, so we will see in the future", said Guardiola, talking ahead of City's visit to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Joe Gomez, shunted back to the right of defence to accommodate Dejan Lovren's first Premier League appearance of the season, made up for his loss of possession to Fernandinho to chase back and block Raheem Sterling's angled shot.

"But if it's an open game at Anfield, an open game against Liverpool, you don't even have one chance, not even one percent".

"Yeah, if you play so quick they are much better than us", he said.

The right-back Kyle Walker, meanwhile, was far more restrained than usual, slotting in nearly as a third central defender when Benjamin Mendy pushed forward down the left. "He was on the pitch when the first penalty was not given", the City manager said.

Jurgen Klopp said he is satisfied with Liverpool's points total after a hard run and described the resumption of the UEFA Nations League as "the most senseless competition" in football. I liked it, but if you want to win against City, you have to use a few of these half-chances.

"I thought how we defended was brilliant apart from the penalty and one or two situations where we needed Alisson with a really good save. We were close, more than ever to winning here but it is better than last season when we lose and especially when we try to be ourselves all the time", he added. Okay, we miss a bit in front, a little more creativity and pace to finish the action, but it is not easy because they are so strong and good.
