"Voyager-2" will soon leave the Solar system

NASA’s Voyager 2 Spacecraft is Getting Close to Interstellar Space

Over the past 11 years, the Voyager 2 space probe is traveling through the outermost layer of the heliosphere which is the massive bubble that encapsulates the Sun and the planets of our Solar System, dominated by solar magnetic fields.

According to NASA, the spacecraft has started to detect the same increase in cosmic radiation that hit Voyager 1 just before it finally entered interstellar space.

Once Voyager 2 exits the heliosphere, it would be the second human-made space probe to reach the interstellar space after Voyager 1 which managed to exit our Solar System in August 2012.

"We're going to learn a lot in the coming months, but we still don't know when we'll reach the heliopause".

"We're seeing a change in the environment around Voyager 2, and there's no doubt about that". Throughout the Solar System, the wind from the Sun exerts an outward pressure. Soon, Voyager 2 will join it, with the probe's sensors detecting a gradual increase in cosmic rays over the last few months.

Its twin probe, Voyager 1, got there first in 2012 after detecting a similar increase in cosmic rays.

Cosmic rays are subatomic particles, primarily hydrogen and helium nuclei, that zoom through space at incredibly high speeds. But as the mission went on, and with the successful achievement of all its objectives, mission scientists and engineers at JPL saw it was possible to have them do additional flybys of the two outermost giant planets, Uranus and Neptune.

NASA's Voyager 2 probe, now on a journey toward interstellar space, has detected an increase in cosmic rays that originate outside our solar system.

An interstellar analysis is a space detection that has left or is likely to adieu the Solar System and infiltrates interstellar space, which is commonly well-defined as the region ayond the heliopause. A good portion of these particles are blocked by the heliosphere, so the ground teams are expecting Voyager 2 to measure an increase in cosmic rays as it reaches and crosses the heliosphere.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 spacecraft is now nearly 11 billion miles from Earth or more than 118 times the distance between Earth and the Sun. In other words, the bubble of our solar system periodically expands and contracts. "We're not there yet - that's one thing I can say with confidence", Stone added. However, this solar wind wanes every 11 years in accordance with the solar cycle.
