Brees broke the record on a 62-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith in the second quarter. Brees, meanwhile, was able to share the moment with his wife and children down on the sideline.

Drew Brees has done it! So, thank you very much.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees topped Manning's mark of 71,940 yards Monday, accomplishing the feat in the latter's hometown of New Orleans, during a nationally televised game against the Washington Redskins. Brees now has 1545 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

"Congrats on the achievement/milestone".

Saints' quarterback Drew Brees set a new National Football League record for career passing yards in Monday night's blowout win against the Redskins - and he did it in style. However, he has some competition from 40-year-old Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who threw his 500th touchdown pass Thursday, while Favre is now in second place at 508. Brees threw No. 499 in the third quarter on Tuesday.

Drew Brees is now the NFL's all-time leading passer!

Manning, a New Orleans native whose father, Archie, starred for the Saints, could not attend the game because of a scheduling conflict.

It was a good-natured video from Manning, and he wrapped it up with serious congratulations.

"And thanks to you, that's over now". You've got to love the guy taking the news of his record being topped in stride. "I don't have time to keep doing these videos for you, congratulating you". "All your hard work and dedication has paid off".

Saints officials said Brees also would hand his uniform over to the Hall of Fame after the game.

The Saints took a chance on Brees in 2006, and the payoff has been extraordinary. He led the Saints to a Super Bowl win over Manning and the Colts in 2009.

Anticipating that Brees might break the record against his team, Redskins Coach Jay Gruden told the Athletic's Tarik El-Bashir before the game, "It's a great accomplishment, man".
