Wall Street Journal report: Google exposed private data of Google+ users, refused to disclose the breach

Google+ received mixed reviews and ratings when Google launched it in 2011 after it retired Google Buzz, another attempt at gaining traction in the social networking world.

The tech giant said it would shut down the consumer version of the platform after it revealed users' data may have been exposed by a bug that was present for more than two years.

The announcement came in a Monday blog post, which was also Google's first public description of the privacy bug.

As a bit of a bright side, however, there was no evidence that any developer was even aware this bug existed, despite 438 applications using the API. Google also said it would shutter the consumer version of Google+.

The Wall Street Journal, reported that they have reviewed a memo prepared by Google's legal and policy staff, which indicated that disclosing the data breach could lead to scrutiny by government regulatory agencies. That said, social media is the business where Google has failed to mark its presence.

According to the WSJ report, a software glitch gave outside developers potential access to private Google+ profile data between 2015 and March of this year, when internal investigators discovered the issue and addressed it.

In any case, the conclusion is the same: Google is shutting down the consumer version of Google+, citing challenges in maintaining the service effectively. Furthermore, Goole even decided not to disclose this bug to the public as it feared Repercussions. It's worth noting that Microsoft also has several active Google+ communities dedicated to its most popular Android apps such as the Microsoft Launcher, and it's not clear yet what will happen to them.

The company will wind down Google+ over 10 months, targeting an August 2019 shutdown.

Up to 500,000 people may have been affected by the flaw, which allowed hundreds of apps to access data including people's jobs, ages and location information.

Over the coming months, Google will update users with additional information, including ways to download and migrate data.

Action 4: We are limiting apps' ability to receive Call Log and SMS permissions on Android devices, and are no longer making contact interaction data available via the Android Contacts API.

Google has recently been at the center of a number of privacy breaches. "By giving developers more explicit rules of the road, and helping users control your data, we can ensure that we keep doing just that", reads the blog.

Google has thus far been able to defer much of the criticism to Facebook and Twitter, but the Google+ bug may thrust it further into the spotlight.
