Emergency services have been burying people as they are found after the disaster, which killed more than 1,550 people in and around the port city of Palu on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Hundreds of people are believed to be entombed in slowly drying mud that enveloped communities in the south of the small city of Palu when the quake triggered soil liquefaction, a phenomenon that turns the ground into a roiling quagmire.

The Aid or access is still an obstacle to reach the stricken communities on Indonesian island of Sulawesi, UN aid agencies said on Friday.

A team of French rescue experts began hunting through a huge expanse of debris on the outskirts of the Indonesian city of Palu on Saturday, looking for hands, feet or any body parts of quake victims sticking out of the mud.

National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that among the victims, 1,413 were from Palu city, the hardest-hit in twin disasters, Xinhua news agency reported.

Philip Besson, a member of the French organization Pompiers de l'urgence, said the team "detected the presence of a victim" in the wreckage of the Mercure Hotel but wasn't able to say if the person is conscious.

Spokesman of joint task force for Central Sulawesi province Col. Infantry Muh Thohir said that a total of 2,549 people were still in hospitals for medical treatment after the disasters hit the central province on September 28.

"All houses built along the coastline were swept away by the tsunami".

The most intact structure in the area was a battered two-storey house, pitched over at almost 45 degrees with one side buried and a blue vehicle in the auto port.

Rescuers who recovered the bodies told Hidayat his sister was found holding Aisah close. The United Nations has said some 200,000 people, including tens of thousands of children, are in need of help.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi says military transport aircraft from India and Singapore have arrived to help in relief efforts in central Sulawesi, which was hit by a powerful quake and tsunami.

Indonesia has often been reluctant to be seen as relying on outside help to cope with disasters.

But the trickle of worldwide aid to Palu and local efforts to help the survivors have accelerated in recent days. He said security will be necessary for economic activity to resume.

Hasnah said she has enough food and water but she's furious that a search and rescue operation in her area only began on Thursday. "I didn't manage to take any valuables but we are alive and that's most important", Yuli, who goes by one name, said on local television. Taiwan's Tzu Chi Foundation sent a 10-person team consisting of doctors and nurses from Jakarta with more to arrive later. Officials have said that it is not safe for heavy equipment to operate in those areas and that they fear the risk of the spread of disease from decomposed bodies.

The official toll has surpassed 1,400 deaths with thousands injured and 70,000 residents displaced.

Life is on hold for thousands living in tents and shelters in the Indonesian city hit by a powerful quake and tsunami. Figures for more remote areas, some only just re-connected to the outside world by road, are only trickling in.
