Here's the first question Kavanaugh asked the counsel for Denard Stokeling, referencing the 2010 case Johnson v.

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation previous year of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia.

People hoping to see Justice Brett Kavanaugh's first day on the Supreme Court bench are waiting in long lines outside the court.

This comes after Kavanaugh was sworn in over the weekend by retired Justice Anthony Kennedy and Chief Justice John Roberts, who also attended the ceremony.

With police standing by, a small group of protesters demonstrated outside the courthouse, holding signs saying "Shame" and "He sits on a throne of lies", while chanting, "This isn't over, we're still here".

There were no disruptions in the courtroom, and the justices laughed at one another's jokes.

The Senate vote approving Kavanaugh's nomination followed a bitter partisan fight that became a firestorm after sexual misconduct allegations emerged.

Nadler called the FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh - which only lasted a week and was limited in scope - a "whitewash" investigation, according to the New York Times. Gorsuch responded with a faux grimace of pain.

"I mean you're not exactly on a winning streak here in ACCA cases", Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. told the lawyer arguing for the federal government.

CNN legal analyst Joan Biskupic said Brett Kavanaugh would be "changing the law of the land" for the next 20 years as the newest Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

The cases, involving a Florida robbery and burglaries in Tennessee and Arkansas, challenged the types of crimes that qualify as violent felonies under that law and can lead to 15-year mandatory minimum sentences. Kavanaugh has also hired four clerks, all women, the first time that has happened.

Based on Tuesday's arguments, defendants could win in both cases, with liberal justices likely to be joined by some conservatives in the majority.

"However much we might sympathize or agree with EPA's policy objectives, EPA may act only within the boundaries of its statutory authority", Kavanaugh wrote in the ruling.

Part of the duties of the junior justice include taking notes at the weekly closed-door conferences, where current appeals are voted on and pending cases are added to the docket.

The accusations transformed the clash from a routine struggle over judicial ideology into an angry jumble of questions about victims' rights and personal attacks on nominees. "No one who felt the force of that anger could possibly believe that Kavanaugh might actually be a detached and impartial judge". He made an extraordinary apology to Mr Kavanaugh on behalf of the country for what he'd been through, after being publicly accused of sexual assault. Instead, the former D.C. Circuit judge missed the first week of arguments as the Senate considered an allegation that he had sexually assaulted a woman in high school, an allegation he adamantly denied.

He later expressed regret over some of his comments.

"The Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional", Kavanaugh said.
