Donald Trump has apologized to his new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and his family for "the awful pain and suffering" they "endured" during the process of his confirmation.

In a swearing-in ceremony at the White House, following a torrid confirmation process that divided America, the U.S. president slammed Democrat opponents for having waged a "campaign of personal destruction" against Justice Kavanaugh.

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is diving into his new job, asking a handful of questions in the first arguments of the day. He told an audience that included the entire Supreme Court and a Who's Who of Republican movers and shakers that he had "no bitterness" and would never bring politics into the top court.

Questions from Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's two high court picks, suggested they could vote against the Trump administration and side with a criminal defendant from Florida who is fighting an increase in his sentence from just over six years to possibly more than 15 years.

The newest justice's wife and two daughters were in seats reserved for justices' guests, along with retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

As for the generic congressional ballot, the CNN poll found Democrats with a 13-point lead among likely voters, with 54% of respondents saying they would vote for the Democratic Party's candidate and 41% saying they planned to vote for the GOP nominee. He claimed he was the first justice to have an all-female staff.

"I would like to begin tonight proceeding differently than perhaps any other event of such magnitude", Trump had begun Kavanaugh's second swearing-in ceremony, signaling some big reality TV-esque reveal was about to happen.

Trump and his fellow Republicans are hoping the confirmation of the 53-year-old conservative jurist will energize their supporters in the midterm voting when political control of Congress is at stake.

"Trump called the protests "phony stuff" and even gave a special shout out to the FBI's so-called investigation of Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault accusation against Kavanaugh".

Cory Booker of New Jersey, who sits on the senate's judiciary committee, was asked Sunday in Iowa by Yahoo News about the prospects of a Kavanaugh impeachment.

He added: "I think it's an insult to the American public". That evening, he took his oaths of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court while protesters chanted outside the court building.

The other eight justices also were at the White House Monday.

"I thought it was one of the most disgraceful performances I've ever seen", Trump said Monday of the Democrats' fight against Kavanaugh, who replaces Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions.

A petition to impeach Justice Kavanaugh has more than 150,000 signatures.

His ascent to the court was sealed by a 50-48 Senate vote last Saturday.
