Taking the No. 1 spot this week in spectacular fashion is "Venom" bringing in an estimated $80 million in its first weekend out. This effectively topples the previous October opening weekend record set by Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity when it earned $55.8 million in 2013. It crushed the worldwide box office as well, earning $125.2 million, led by South Korean receipts of $16.3 million.

The Tom Hardy-fronted movie, based on a popular Marvel Comics favourite, had received cold reviews from critics, winning only a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering it was directly competing with A Star Is Born, which also took more than $40m, that's pretty damn impressive.

In their tweet, the pop duo encourage fans to "make the right decision today", implying music lovers should purchase a copy of "Trench" instead of the "Star Is Born" soundtrack, with band members Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun portraying Gaga and co-star Bradley Cooper.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.

Warner Bros' A Star is Born, the third remake of the classic 1937 film of the same name, also had a fine debut as well, earning 40 million dollars.

"A Star Is Born" holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and rode that buzz to a very strong opening weekend for an awards film.
