Speaking to the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the launch of the Mental Health Day in Accra yesterday, he said the developments were catalysts for mental illness.

The project is being organised by a group of 12 people - the majority of whom are under 30 and have experienced mental illness.

The article explained that around the world, mental health conditions cost roughly US$2.5 trillion per year, "a figure that is expected to balloon to $6tn by 2030 unless we take action".

A mental health advocate in California, who has recently been awarded by the State Senate, said on Wednesday that her priority now is to help raise the awareness of mental illnesses among young Chinese Americans.

Global firm Dechert has introduced mental health "first aiders" into its workforce, as the debate around wellbeing in the legal sector grows.

Adewale said: "Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated".

Anxiety and depression are the most common categories of mental illnesses.

A seminar on mental health was held at the university campus later. Psychosocial support can be provided in schools and other community settings and, of course, training for health workers to enable them to detect and manage mental health disorders can be put in place, improved or expanded. "Triggers of serious mental illness such as economics and social stresses are staring at us in our very youthful years".

Jasmine from Wickford has experienced these types of benefits first-hand, with her ten-year-old cockapoo Lily, who she got whilst going through a hard time in her life.

Parents who wake their children up early in order to beat traffic and get to school early may be exposing the children to mental illness, the acting Director of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, has warned.

"Far too many people affected by emotional, mental, or substance abuse disorders, are overlooked because there are no obvious signs of their distress".

It was part of a raft of announcements in a bid to tackle mental ill health, including better care for children. In Africa, nearly three out of four countries spend less than 1% of their health budget on mental health, the World Health Organisation's 2015 Mental Health Atlas shows.

Why? Because most people, who suffer from major depressive disorder, would rather hide their emotions than be a burden to their loved ones. But both of us have seen how political leadership, funding, innovation and individual acts of bravery and compassion can change the world. We need to not confuse the two.

India needs web-based online portals such as the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) to reach out to its vast population.
