Colorado health department reports 14 cases of polio-like illness in children

Acute flaccid myelitis is so rare that less than one in a million will get it, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

He is advising parents to take their children to the emergency room if they notice any focal weakness.

Dr. Acosta said there is no cure or treatment at this time.

For example, in Minnesota, cases of AFM were generally stagnant at about one case per year, but now six children have been confirmed to have AFM in 2018 alone.

The children are being evaluated for AFM, a rare condition that affects the nervous system, specifically the spinal cord.

Other states have also reported cases. "We're working closely with medical providers and public health agencies".

The illness causes a weakening of the nerves and resembles polio. It is actively investigating AFM cases, and trying to unearth more information about the mysterious condition. The CDC says the condition is not new but there's been an increase in cases starting in 2014.

Doctors call severe cases of AFM a polio-like illness where people will have paralyzed limbs. A 2-year-old girl was recently diagnosed in the Chicago area, and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh confirmed that three children are now being treated for AFM at their facility.

"There's a sudden onset of weakness in the arm, leg, face, or the muscles that help us swallow and that we use to speak", says Dr. Amaran Moodley from the Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

AFM cases first spiked in the United States in August 2014.

With research, doctors are trying to figure out if AFM is coming from the same enterovirus family, but not every child diagnosed with AFM has the virus.

Even with extensive lab testing, AFM is hard to diagnose, because it so similar to other conditions, including poliovirus, West Nile virus and adenoviruses, the CDC reports.

However, 11 of the Colorado cases of AFM have tested positive for EV A71, a rare type of enterovirus not usually seen in the US but instead in Asia and other parts of the world, according to Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the Colorado state epidemiologist.

The health department says there are no specific recommendations for avoiding AFM, but washing your hands, avoiding close contact with sick people, cleaning surfaces with disinfectants, and staying up-to-date on immunizations is recommended.

In 2017, 33 cases were reported in 16 states.
