Instagram is taking a stand against cyber-bullying.

"Since Instagram tends to skew toward a younger audience, it's really important to see that the platform is starting to take more progressive steps toward protecting their most vulnerable users".

In one of his first moves since taking the job last week, the new head of Instagram announced new features created to prevent bullying on the popular social media platform. When encountering such instances, the AI technology will detect the photos and won't act as an executioner but instead, it will forward such uploads to the human reviewers who will review and flag the photos and videos as appropriate or inappropriate.

The move will prevent users from posting defamatory notes as photos or images containing obscene, bullying or harassment-inducing content.

Instagram's machine learning tech is able to scan photos and their captions for hurtful content and automatically send it to the community operations team for review.

"Online bullying is complex, and we know we have more work to do to further limit bullying and spread kindness on Instagram", Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said in an official statement. The company has already started rolling out this new technology, which will be deployed over "coming weeks", according to the company.

Instagram had introduced a bullying comment filter which - as the name suggests - detects and hides bullying comments from Feed, Explore and Profile.

Instagram has partnered with Maddie Ziegler, a New York Times bestselling author, dancer and actor to launch a kindness camera effect. The technology that enables such detection was surveyed previous year by Wired, which highlighted the company's inner attempts at machine-learning comment filters. In selfie mode, your face is covered in hearts, and you can tag someone to support, according to the blog post. This also includes comparison photos wherein users could post split-screen photos comparing someone in a negative way.
