U.S., Russian astronauts make emergency landing after booster rocket fails

New Space Station Crew Launches Thursday Watch It Live

"The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station at 4:40 a.m. EDT Thursday Oct. 11, carrying American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin".

"Search and rescue teams are in contact with the crew and are en route to the landing location", NASA said.

Video footage from the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome shows a large plume of smoke coming from the rocket at the moment it failed and footage from inside the capsule shows the two astronauts being violently shaken about.

Army paratroopers were reportedly dropped in the area to help with rescue efforts.

This morning, the first launch since the possible sabotage was discovered, Russia's Soyuz booster saw its first in-flight failure in recent memory, and the first manned rocket-related emergency in decades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev have been told about the accident. The launch was to have been Hague's first space mission.

It's exceptionally hard to believe Roscosmos could rush through an incident investigation before the scheduled December 20th launch of Soyuz MS-11, even if the fault is found to be operational and not with the rocket itself.

"If you abandon the space station, then there's no one there to fix things as they fail - and they'll eventually have a serious problem", he said.

NASA, however, is planning to launch manned missions from USA soil in the coming years.

The former military pilots were meant to join Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Roscosmos's Sergey Prokopyev on the ISS after a six-hour flight.

"The emergency rescue system worked, the vessel was able to land in Kazakhstan. the crew are alive", the Russian space agency Roscosmos said in a tweet.

US and Russian space officials said the astronauts are in good condition after Thursday's aborted launch.

An "anomaly" with the booster led to the launch being aborted, NASA later said.

The failure of Soyuz MS-10 has started a domino effect which will deprive the ISS of the five crew members which were scheduled to be aboard by the end of 2018.

Russia says it is suspending manned space launches pending a probe into a Russian booster rocket failure, raising questions about the fate of an upcoming launch that included a Canadian astronaut.

In 2003, when Expedition 6 crew members Ken Bowersox and Don Pettit and their cosmonaut counterpart Nikolai Budarin returned from a five-month stay aboard the ISS, their automated controls failed, forcing the re-entry in ballistic mode.

Russian Federation has set up a state commission to investigate the Soyuz booster rocket failure.

But there does need to be a crew on board for the first test flights of new commercial crew vehicles that NASA is supporting.

The rocket's emergency abort system took over at that point, ejecting the Soyuz capsule, which carried the two-man crew on a harrowing ride back down to Earth.

Rogozin, the Roscosmos chief, has raised wide consternation by saying that an air leak spotted at the International Space Station was a drill hole that was made intentionally during manufacturing or in orbit.
