Floods destroy bridge, force evacuations in Central Texas

Flooding along the Llano River reached 30 feet above flood stage this morning nearly breaking a record

The Llano River reached historic levels of flooding Tuesday, prompting officials in Marble Falls to order evacuations and open shelters for displaced residents. The river is expected to crest at 41 feet.

The river topped out at almost 40 feet this morning, but the National Weather Service expects waters to surge again tomorrow morning.

Emergency managers in Llano County, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) northwest of Austin, welcome the forecast but say it's not yet safe for residents to return home. Flooding was also seen upstream in Kingsland, Texas, where a bridge collapsed. The bloated Llano River overran the FM 2900 bridge, sending chunks of concrete and metal rushing down the river.

One body was pulled from the Colorado River in Burnet County while Llano County officials confirmed the discovery of a second body on Tuesday.

Four people were washed away when the South Llano River overran an RV park in Junction last week. The lake is situated where the Llano River flows into the Colorado River. The National Weather Service says both rivers are experiencing "major flooding" following several days of rain.

Texan Governor Greg Abbot declared a state of disaster in 18 state counties swamped by severe weather and major flooding on Tuesday. Southern portions of Burnet County - including Horseshoe Bay, Marble Falls and Granite Shoals - are under a flash flood warning until 9:30 p.m.

Authorities said it does not to appear to be a person missing from the South Llano River flooding in Junction more than a week ago.

In Austin, the Austin Fire Department has issued a ban on recreational activity in all waterways within the city limits until Thursday at noon.

The flooded communities are about a 90-minute drive northwest of Austin.

At least two people are known to have died.

Three bodies have been recovered but the search for the fourth was suspended due to the heavy rain.

It comes as authorities continue to carry out numerous water rescues across Central Texas after more than a foot of rain fell in recent days.
