Paul Scholes says even Lionel Messi would struggle to shine in the current Manchester United team and that the struggling club are being laughed at by their rivals.

The match was played in a tense atmosphere, United having denied a report earlier in the day that Mourinho would be sacked that weekend regardless of the result.

"I'm thinking of a [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Eden] Hazard or David Silva", Scholes told ESPN.

'The city itself is cool, but I stay at home, because the weather here is not very good, it rains a lot, there is a lot of wind, we just want to stay at home.

The Belgian worldwide has made 11 appearances in all competitions for Man Utd so far this season and Mourinho may call on him again as he looks to improve upon their eighth-place position in the Premier League with a positive result at Chelsea.

Scholes is concerned that Manchester United are starting to toil like Liverpool FC did throughout much of the 1990s and 2000s.

The report also added that Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal has been urging manager Ernesto Valverde to sign the 2018 World Cup victor in January.

"If the team don't play well then they're brought back in for an hour, then left out".

While a number of players find their current contracts expiring in the near future, one young forward looks set to pen down a new deal and commit his long-term future to the Old Trafford outfit.

United have endured a torrid start to the 2018/19 season, now in eighth position after their last-gasp 3-2 victory over Newcastle before the worldwide break.

Fowler suggested that Salah and Tottenham Hotspur target man Harry Kane have been on the end of an unfair comparison to Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi, believing that such level of expectation will never be matched by the Premier League duo.
