"Last year an estimated 80,000 adults nationwide died from the flu, with 183 influenza deaths in children - three of which were in MS", said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers.

The health department did not say where the child died after testing positive for influenza B. The child had not been vaccinated. Officials say the child was otherwise healthy, with no underlying conditions. "Getting vaccinated can reduce flu illnesses, doctor's visits, missed work and school days, and prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths in children". Plus, a child in Florida has already died from the flu. The CDC recommends everyone over 6 months of age get vaccinated by the end of October each year. The newborn to 4 years old age group had 29 reported cases for the first week of the flu season.

Adding pharmacies in addition to traditional locations (physicians' offices, hospitals) in a more severe epidemic could potentially mitigate up to nearly 24 million symptomatic cases of influenza and could provide cost savings of up to nearly $3 billion in direct medical costs, the authors wrote in Vaccine. There is no way you can get the flu.

People at high risk for flu complications include children younger than 5, adults 65 years and older and pregnant women, the CDC says.

"It's hard to predict how badly an influenza season will be, just because the strains do change and can change over time and it's hard to predict when an influenza season will start", explained Sikora, who is AHS' acting senior medical officer of health. "And the way you get protected is to be immunized against influenza", Sikora said Monday, the first day of the province's influenza immunization program. "That has indeed impacted delivery for all types of vaccines, but flu mist is one of those and we are certainly seeing those delays".

"The influenza vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from becoming ill with influenza", said Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services Fran Phillips, RN, MHA.
