The CDC first identified AFM cases in the U.S.in 2014. "CDC and state and local health departments are still investigating some of these PUIs".

Palacios says she wants answers to what causes AFM, and how to prevent and treat it - for Abigail, and for other families who have been affected by it.

"This is most likely a viral illness".

"Because you don't know what causes it, you can not tell how to avoid it", he said.

Local health officials said an Ingham County man is now being monitored for a rare-condition that causes polio-like symptoms.

The condition affects the nervous system and affects fewer than 1 million people a year. "So, for every case there is, there are nearly a million kids who don't have it". So far, cases have been confirmed across 22 states.

Some experts believe AFM is being caused by a summertime virus because of the timing of the outbreaks. The CDC has not determined why this is the case, nor does it know of any long-term effects of the disease. It caused an outbreak of 160 confirmed cases in the Lower Hudson Valley of NY in 2016, they reported."It looks like the new strains are better able to affect human motor neuron-like cells than older strains", said Tyler. It wasn't just the U.S.: European researchers reported 29 cases of EV-D68 infection in children and adults with acute flaccid myelitis in 2016.Tyler and colleagues infected mice with EV-D68 and showed it could affect the nervous system.

Lynn Sutfin is a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

AFM has been compared to polio because it can lead to paralysis and possibly death, but polio and West Nile virus have been ruled out. "You can see enterovirus particles in the motor neurons."It's not proof, Tyler said". "It is a public health phenomenon". She's making sure her granddaughter stays germ-free.

Medical and clinical laboratory professionals provide about 70 percent of laboratory medicine data and results so that physicians and others in healthcare can make a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. "The CDC reminds everyone the best way to prevent any illnesses is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, cover your mouth when coughing and keep up on vaccinations". "It's very scary. Especially when there's children involved", Wisby said.

Watch your child for symptoms such as high fever that doesn't go away or any type of paralysis.
