Former nurse Niels Hoegel, accused of killing more than 100 patients in his care, wears a bullet proof vest as he is lead out of the court compound towards a prisoner's transport vehicle, on October 2018 in Oldenburg, northern Germany, after the first day of his trial.

Niels Hoegel, 41, is already serving a life sentence on charges of murder and attempted murder for deaths that occurred while he was working at two hospitals in northern Germany between 2000 and 2005.

"What I have admitted took place", he told the courtroom, which was full of grieving relatives of victims. He said then that he intentionally brought about cardiac crises in some 90 patients in Delmenhorst because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them. The broadcaster said the crimes would make him one of post-war Germany's worst serial killers.

Hoegel has admitted to killing around 30 of his patients and will face trial over 100 deaths.

In Britain, Dr Harold Shipman was believed to have killed as many as 250 people, a lot of them elderly and middle-aged women who were his patients.

Hoegel's trial is expected to end in May of next year.

They believe he was motivated by professional vanity, but also by boredom.

He was found guilty of murder and attempted murder of five other victims and given the maximum sentence of 15 years. 'The aim is for Hoegel to stay in custody as long as possible'.

Hoegel, who is already serving a life term, has confessed to dozens of killings.

Hoegel said during his time as a nurse, he would give patients non-prescribed drugs to show off resuscitation skills, or because he was bored.

"We want him to get the sentence that he deserves", said Frank Brinkers, whose father died in an overdose allegedly administered by Hoegel.

In the UK, Dr Harold Shipman was believed to have killed as many as 250 people, a lot of them elderly and middle-aged women who were his patients.

Oldenburg police chief Johann Kuehme previous year said other medical workers at Oldenburg were aware of an elevated number of resuscitations, and initial indications of possible wrongdoing by the nurse in Delmenhorst emerged as early as April 2003.
