This year's flu shot is expected to be much more effective than last season's, which ended up being a poor match for the predominant circulating strain, known as A-H3N2, said Dr. Michelle Murti of Public Health Ontario.

It will take place on the second floor of the Police Department Thursday from 3pm-5pm.

It is a first come, first served basis. The trivalent vaccine protects against three strains of the flu - an influenza A, or H1N1, virus; an influenza A, or H3N2, virus; and an influenza B virus.

Despite the hope that this country may duplicate Australia's flu season, Murti said Canadians shouldn't assume there's no point in getting vaccinated. It usually doesn't arrive until January or so so this is early.

Global Positioning System across Northern Ireland are offering flu vaccination to everyone over 65, pregnant women, and people under 65 with underlying health conditions. According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to illnesses, and studies show that people who are chronically sleep deprived are more prone to getting sick after being exposed to a virus.

"It is very serious, particularly for the most vulnerable", she said.

One resource for students and faculty at the UA to receive their flu shot is at Campus Health.

However, in recent years, flu vaccines are egg-free have become available. The point here is that sometimes people start out with a common cold infection but then get infected with influenza shortly after. However, anybody can contract the virus, even healthy people.

It takes approximately two weeks following vaccination to develop maximum protection against flu. The guideline that I use and this is not a strict guideline, is I want patients to tell me that they had a sudden onset of chills, fever, and very bad muscle and body aches.

As this happens, your immune system develops antibodies against the influenza virus which is in the vaccine so that it will recognise it and and be able to fight it off if you are exposed to it again.

The most effective way to prevent the flu is getting the annual flu vaccination which is recommended for everyone above the age of 6 months. "(The vaccine) reduces how severe the virus is and reduces the likelihood of passing it on".

See the HealthMap Vaccine Finder for administration sites near you. While the risk increased with other respiratory infections, influenza caused the greatest increase.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza runs most severely rampant from October to May, which means we are now well into the first month of flu season.

Many people tend to underestimate the true intensity of the flu. "It is safe in any trimester and offers protection to babies by generating antibodies in pregnant women". There are two things I like to emphasize all year round but especially this time of year. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, don't store tissues. Wash your hands often throughout the day.
