A member of the US armed forces was killed and another was wounded in an apparent insider attack on Saturday in the Afghan capital Kabul, according to Resolute Support, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation training mission in the country. Taylor had served with the Utah National Guard since 2013.

Taylor temporarily stepped down as mayor to deploy to Afghanistan with the Utah Army National Guard, according to his biography on North Ogden's website.

Brent Taylor, the mayor of North Ogden, Utah, and an energetic and beloved figure in Utah politics, was killed Saturday in an incident in Afghanistan, where he was serving as a member of the state National Guard.

"We are devastated by the loss of our Mayor and friend, Brent Taylor", the city said on its Facebook page.

The unexpected death of Taylor, who was months from finishing his tour and is survived by seven children and his wife Jennie, drew an outpouring of grief in Utah and on social media late Saturday.

According to the Washington Post, Taylor was killed when a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire on us forces in an apparent "insider attack".

The other service member, who was wounded, is undergoing medical treatment and in stable condition, according to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation statement.

'I wish them all the comfort and courage to face the hard days ahead'. "We must rally around his family".

Taylor was part of an advisory team tasked with training Afghan commandos.

His last Facebook post, on October 28, highlighted a successful election in Afghanistan. "Things are going great, and I absolutely love the dedicated USA and Afghan soldiers I serve with every day". "And that whether the Republicans or the Democrats win, that we all remember that we have far more as Americans that unites us than divides us".

Timothy Bolyard was shot dead in an insider attack, killed by one of the Afghan security members he came to Afghanistan to train.
