Report says people are safe — Cellphones and cancer

Cellphone Radiation Causes Cancer in Rats, Government Study Finds

A National Institutes of Health study released on Thursday warns that cell phone radiation can cause cancers of the heart, brain and adrenal glands.

Still, experts argue, even a small demonstrated rise in cancer risk could have wide implications, given that billions of people use cellphones.

The National Toxicology Programme study was started in the Clinton administration when the government was still interested in science and less interested in what the Bible or big corporates had to say.

"When new studies or information becomes available, the FDA conducts thorough evaluations of the data to continually inform our thinking", said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the U.S. FDA's director for Devices and Radiological Health, such animal studies are important in the discussion, but it was not created to test the safety of cellphones in humans and could therefore not be used to draw conclusions for humans.

Researchers were able to control the amount of radio frequency the animals received - something that isn't possible with humans. "Thus, the results of these studies remain relevant to current exposures, although the power levels of the exposures were much higher than typical patterns of human use".

American biologists have introduced a new potential evidence that radio waves are now used in 2G and 3G cell phones, can cause cancer of the heart, liver and some other organs. Additionally, cardiac Schwann cell hyperplasia occurred in groups of male rats exposed to both GSM- and CDMA-modulated cell phone RFR. If the results of this study still makes you feel a little concerned about putting your smartphone to your ear, you can always opt to use earbuds to make your calls instead.

Researchers claimed to have found "clear evidence" that shows radiation from cell phones does cause cancer, the Daily Mail reported.

Some scientists have warned that 5G - which uses milimeter waves, rather than the microwaves that were the basis of previous generations - may in fact be more risky, but its far too soon to tell for sure. And the highest radiation level used in the study was four times higher than the maximum level allowed in people. For comparison, fourth generation (4G) and fifth generation (5G) phones employ much higher frequencies, which are "far less successful at penetrating the bodies of humans and rats", the New York Times reports.

The final reports are the conclusions of NTP and a panel of external scientific experts who reviewed the studies in March after draft reports were issued in February.

He said the overall findings of the study - 384 pages devoted to rats, 260 to mice - had been conveyed to the Federal Communications Commission and the FDA.

In June, at a meeting of scientific counselors to the toxicology agency, Donald Stump, one of the members, anxious that the study "will be vulnerable to criticism that it was conducted using outdated technology". "From what we now understand, it likely differs dramatically from what we studied", said Wyde.

The lowest exposure level used in the studies was equal to the maximum local tissue exposure now allowed for mobile phone users but this power level rarely occurs with typical use.

"My family and I won't change our mobile-phone habits based on this news", said George Gray, co-author of the book "Risk: A Practical Guide for Deciding What's Really Safe and What's Really Dangerous in the World Around You".
