Amazon will open separate HQ2 locations in 2 different cities

Amazon in 'advanced talks' to build new HQ near DC

More than a year after Amazon announced that it was searching for a second headquarters, the company has chose to split the new offices between two cities, according to a person familiar with Amazon's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly.

According to the Washington Post, which spoke with several sources, Amazon has been holding "advanced discussions" about placing its second headquarters in Virginia's Crystal City, a neighborhood of Arlington.

The journal reports Amazon is discussing incentives with government officials in Crystal City and speaking with a real estate investment trust, which owns property in the city. This plan will split employees between the two headquarters at 25,000 each.

A new report suggests that Amazon's highly sought-after HQ2 won't go to one city, but two. In early 2018, it released its list of 20 finalists.

The Washington metropolitan area was long considered a top contender for Amazon's second headquarters. The aging NY subway system has several issues the city is working to fix.

"Amazon may select one or more proposals and negotiate with the parties submitting such proposals before making an award decision, or it may select no proposals and enter into no agreement", the company said.

Many reporters quickly reacted on Twitter to the Journal story, with some joking about naming conventions.

Mike Grella, Amazon's director of Economic Development Public Policy tweeted Saturday that leaks pointing toward Crystal City as the HQ2 selection wasn't doing the city any favors. Such a move could also reduce the risk that Amazon's infusion of tens of thousands of workers into a city would have disruptive effects on housing, transportation or other urban issues.

Amazon expects to make its decision by the end of the year.
