3 Girl Scouts, 1 Woman Killed in Wisconsin Hit-and-Run

The Girl Scouts were cleaning up rubbish in a grassy area between the rural road and a farm near the Hwy.

On Saturday November 3, 2018, at about 11:41am Chippewa Fire District and the Village of Lake Hallie Police responded to CTH-P north of CTH-OO in the Village of Lake Hallie, Chippewa County, Wisconsin for a traffic crash. A passenger in Treu's truck also surrendered to police in Eau Claire, but that suspect had not been identified, the newspaper reported.

They were picking up trash along the highway when they were cut down.

Hundreds of community members gathered in 40-degree weather Sunday evening for a vigil outside Halmstad Elementary School, where some of the girls were students. One of the girls attended Southview.

Authorities are set to release the names of the girls and the woman who died on Monday.

A fourth girl struck by the pickup was in critical condition Saturday evening.

In a message to parents, Superintendent Heidi Eliopoulos said: "This is a hard time for our students, families and staff".

She expressed gratitude to local first responders.

Earlier Sunday, teddy bears, balloons and candles sat on two wooden benches in front of Halmstad Elementary while dozens of families met inside with faith leaders and counselors.

The Lake Hallie Police Department extends it's deepest sympathies to the families involved. "We will be providing ongoing support for both students (and) families and staff for as long as needed".

A black truck heading northbound on CTH-P veered out of its lane, crossing over the center line and left the road entirely into the west side ditch line striking 5 members of the group.

Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District Director of Human Resources & Public Relations, Michelle Golden, says the district is "deeply saddened by this tragedy".

Two other girls were taken to hospital with critical injuries; however, doctors could not save one of the girls, who died several hours later. Killed in the crash was Andrew McMorris, 12, a seventh-grader who had just started taking flying lessons and hoped to one day earn his Eagle Scout badge.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) - The Lake Hallie Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run involving five people.

Suddenly, a speeding Ford F-150 veered off the road into a ditch where three girls and an adult chaperone were performing community service.

The Lake Hallie Police Department is leading the investigation but multiple crews responded to the scene, including the Chippewa Falls Police Department, Chippewa County Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and other EMS and fire personnel.
