Lowe's Home Improvement stores in San Jose and South San Francisco with under-performing sales are among 51 in the US and Canada that will close in the coming months, company officials announced Monday.

Both Michigan stores slated to close are located in Genesee County: Lowe's of Burton (Store #761), on E. Court St.in Burton; and Lowe's of Flint (Store #669) on T.A. Mansour Blvd., in Flint Twp.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. - Lowe's Companies, Inc. Lowe's said employees in the affected stores were notified of the closures Sunday evening.

In addition to the 31 locations the brand is closing in Canada, it will also axe 20 stores in the U.S.

In August, Ellison told the Journal that Lowe's needs to improve the use of store space and reduce inventory at its locations, and said some fundamental retail practices hadn't been used at the firm in recent years.

This news comes less than three months after Lowe's announced it would shut all of its Orchard Supply Hardware stores, a subsidiary it owned for about five years.

But Lowe's is struggling to keep up with Home Depot. It will also close 20 "underperforming" stores in the U.S.

Last week, for instance, Lowe's hired Seemantini Godbole, Target's senior vice president of digital and marketing technology, as its new chief information officer.

An accompanying news release describes the 51 locations, 20 of them in the US, as "underperforming".
