Facebook removes more pages, as FBI warns Russia still targeting American voters

Nathaniel Gleicher, the company's head of cybersecurity policy, wrote in a blog post that these accounts were blocked and that almost all of the Facebook pages were written in French or Russian, while the Instagram pages were written in English.

On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a joint statement with the Department of Homeland Security, Justice Department and Director of National Intelligence, said that the agencies had "no indication of compromise of our nation's election infrastructure that would prevent voting, change vote counts, or disrupt the ability to tally votes".

Nearly all of the Facebook pages were in French or Russian, Gleicher added, and the Instagram accounts were mainly in English and focused on either celebrity content or political debate.

"Given that we are only one day away from important elections in the United States, we wanted to let people know about the action we've taken and the facts as we know them today", Gleicher wrote in his post.

It comes after American security services revealed efforts by Russian Federation to spread misinformation and interfere in the 2016 presidential election, using Facebook as a tool to do so.

"We see this as probably the biggest companywide reorientation since our shift from desktops to mobile phones", Samidh Chakrabarti, who's in charge of elections and civic engagement at Facebook, told The New York Times.

In October, the company announced the removal of dozens of accounts linked to Iran for similarly spreading disinformation to more than a million followers in the United Kingdom and US.

An internal investigation into the Iranian accounts found that more than 1 million Facebook users had followed at least one of the fraudulent pages, while about 25,000 users joined at least one of these politically oriented groups, according to a company statement.

At this early stage, Facebook says it doesn't know which foreign actors were attempting to spread mischief on its platform, or whether any of these accounts are linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency.

Facebook, which has been blamed for doing too little to prevent misinformation efforts by Russian Federation and others in the 2016 USA election, now wants the world to know it is taking aggressive steps with initiatives like the war room.
