Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump's request

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced his resignation on Wednesday after unrelenting criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump over his recusal from an investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential race.

The relentless attacks on Sessions came even though the Alabama Republican was the first US senator to endorse Trump and despite the fact that his crime-fighting agenda and priorities - particularly his hawkish immigration enforcement policies - largely mirrored the president's. Sessions said in a letter to Trump that he resigned at the president's request.

In a CNN op-ed published a year ago, Whitaker suggested the investigation had gone too far amid reports the special counsel was looking into financial records relating to the Trump Organization.

Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, later appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to lead the probe.

Odd inherited Sessions's Senate seat after his appointment as U.S. Attorney General. He will serve our Country well. "It's very sad", Trump said during a scathing interview with Hill.TV in September.

"The dismissal of the nation's top law enforcement official is a huge step, one that should not be based on political motives - and certainly should not be done to protect the president or his cronies from the law", Romero said.

"Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else", Trump told the newspaper. That temporary replacement, he then said, could move to choke off Mueller's funding.

Sessions has been an adversary of Trump's since March 2017 when he rescued himself from the Russian Federation probe.

So, clearly, Matthew Whitaker would make a sober, fair-minded, and trustworthy overseer of the Justice Department's transformation into Donald J. Trump's private detective agency.

Whitaker already has some experience under his belt: he previously served as US attorney in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr Trump has repeatedly called on Mr Sessions to end the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether there was any cooperation by his campaign with Moscow.
