Still, Sayoc faces almost 50 years in prison if convicted on five federal charges filed in NY.

Sayoc has been accused of sending improvised explosive devices to numerous Democrats, Trump critics and media outlets in a scare that heightened tensions before the crucial midterm elections, happening the same day as his court appearance.

Prosecutors say the most recent crude bomb was recovered on Friday in California, addressed to liberal activist Tom Steyer.

Prosecutors have said Sayoc is likely to face additional charges and penalties as their investigation proceeds, and should be detained pending trial because he is risky and a flight risk.

His lawyers did not attempt to seek his release on bail after prosecutors released a letter outlining more evidence against him, including DNA linking him to 10 of the explosive devices and fingerprints on two of them.

The first bomb discovered was sent to billionaire investor George Soros at his home in New York's Westchester County, and some of the other high-profile targets also live in NY state, including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

His lawyer has questioned the evidence in the case.

The charges were filed in NY because some of the devices were recovered there.

Cesar Sayoc was transferred from Miami overnight.

All of the bombs were sent through the USA postal service but none exploded and no one was injured.

The week-long series of events where explosive devices began turning up in the post heightened tensions before the crucial midterm elections, which were happening across the United States on the same day as Sayoc's court appearance amid tight security.

The mailed bombs and the separate massacre of 11 Jews at a Pittsburgh synagogue in late October heightened tensions days ahead of Tuesday's elections, which will determine the balance of power in the U.S. Congress now controlled by Trump's Republican Party.

The former stripper and pizza delivery driver was arrested on October 26 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and charged with five federal crimes.

A judge in NY on Tuesday ordered Cesar Sayoc held on mail-bomb charges.
