Trump celebrates GOP gains, threatens House Democrats

US midterms Key factors of the 2018 elections

Democrats have been widely expected to pick up the seats needed to wrest control of the chamber from President Donald Trump's Republicans, who were expected to maintain control of the Senate.

"Tomorrow will be a new day in America", Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a victory party in Washington. Maybe the GOP narrowly holds the House, but Democrats keep the Senate close.

Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to take control of the House.

Heading into Election Day, Democrats were not expected to fare as well in the Senate as in the House of Representatives.

House Democrats may not be able to push their bills into law, but they are certain to use their new majority - and the powers that go with it - to pursue a variety of investigations into Trump Cabinet members accused of misusing taxpayer funds; to subpoena Trump's tax returns and probe his business ties; to reopen the House inquiry into his campaign's link to Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign; and quite possibly pass articles of impeachment against the president, depending upon how big the Democratic majority is. There are some issues, such as infrastructure, where both parties might find agreement.

Opposition control of the house could seriously impede Trump's plans for the next two years, which include trying to build a wall along the Mexican border, possible new tax cuts and more attempts to dismantle Obamacare. It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to. More women than ever are running, along with military veterans and minorities, in districts across the country.

Minnesota voters braved a chilly rain-snow mix Tuesday to cast ballots in high-profile elections for governor and attorney general, two U.S. Senate seats and at least four hotly contested congressional races around the state.

The GOP's successes were fueled by a coalition that's decidedly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have college degrees.

Democrats also boast record diversity on the ballot.

Voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, shattering the record of 84 now.

The mid-terms will decide which party will control the two houses of Congress.

Three states could elect their first African-American governors, while several others are running LGBT candidates and Muslims.

"We always knew these races are going to be close", said Rep. Katherine Clark of MA, co-chair of House Democrats' recruitment efforts. Democratic incumbents prevailed in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which Trump carried narrowly.

How it would happen: Speaking of small but substantial possibilities, that's what Republicans have when it comes to holding the House.

But Democratic former President Barack Obama hit the campaign trail in the election's final days to challenge Trump, questioning his policies and character.

And in Kansas, Democrat Sharice Davids beat a GOP incumbent to become the first Native American and gay woman elected to the House.

With polls closing across the East, one of the top Democratic recruits, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, lost her bid to oust to three-term Rep. Andy Barr in the Lexington-area district.

After the surprising results in the 2016 presidential election, pundits are reluctant to make predictions.

They paved their path to victory by defeating Democrats Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Missouri's Claire McCaskill.

Some hurt worse than others.

Of the 35 seats up for grabs, 26 are held by Democrats and nine by Republicans.

First in line was a retiree, Jerry, who did not want to give his last name and said he was voting for the first time in midterm elections.

Midterm turnout by young adult voters, aged 18 to 29, most recently peaked in 1982, when 31.7 percent of that age group cast a ballot, according to Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University.

AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate conducted by The Associated Press, highlighted the effect Trump was having on voters.

Trump said in an interview with Sinclair Broadcasting on Monday that he wished he had a softer tone during his first two years in office - even as he continued his relentless attacks on political rivals. He frequently invoked his upset win in 2016 and tried to recapture that energy in his final rallies, at times relegating the candidates he had traveled to endorse to supporting actors in the theater of a Trump rally.

The results, Trump argued, were proof of his ability to turn out voters.

Based on data from Gallup, no other president in modern United States history had such a low approval rating heading into their first midterm election. But there are massive implications for 2020, with Democrats in the midst of a debate between the progressive and moderate wings of the party.

Several ambitious Democrats easily won re-election, including presidential prospects Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY.

With more than half of Trump's presidency still to come, how the market will perform over his whole term is unknown.
