After Bye Week Does Michigan Remain Atop Big Ten Power Rankings

The second weekly rankings by the committee that will select the four teams to play for the national championship, revealed Tuesday night, had the Crimson Tide on top, just as it was the week before.

Northwestern's Clayton Thorson, left, tries to break a tackle by Notre Dame's Te'von Coney during the second half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, in Evanston, Ill. That win has been their defining one all season. Boston College 18. Michigan State 19. MSU is the sixth-highest ranked SEC team, joining No. 11 Kentucky and No. 15 Florida.

Alabama and Georgia, who played in last year's College Football Playoff Championship in Atlanta, are headed for a rematch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 1 in the SEC title game. And their own offense didn't look very sharp despite putting up 36 points.

Simple: Win out, get in.

If the season ended Tuesday, Alabama and MI would meet in the Cotton Bowl, and Clemson and Notre Dame would play in the Orange Bowl. Meanwhile, Penn State fell to #20 after getting their butts kicked by MI 42-7. But it shouldn't be ahead of a few of the teams behind it right now.

The defense clearly remains a concern, but the offense puts up crooked numbers every week, keeping them in most games. Both have one loss on the season, but West Virginia's lone loss was by 16 on the road against No. 22 Iowa State. The Sooners must survive the Bedlam game this weekend. The top-four teams in the final rankings on December 2 will play in the national semifinals.

UCF Knights - They will continue to be on the outside looking in just due to their strength of schedule and conference.

Some of those teams will still be ranked based on who they lost to but it will no doubtingly help Fresno State move up in the polls and get Utah State ranked. LSU played Miami to open the season while Washington's toughest non-Pac-12 opponent this season is Wyoming.

The Tigers only fell to No. 7 in the ranking, though many thought the shutout loss should have dropped them further. Remember Michigan still plays Ohio State in the last regular-season game.
