The mother of a 27-year-old man killed in the shooting in Thousand Oaks, Calif. late Thursday night said her son had survived the October mass shooting in Las Vegas.

During Wednesday's shooting, Kelly said he threw two of his friends to the floor and covered them with his body.

"They ran out of the back doors, they broke windows". "They would go fishing up in the Sierras [Nevada mountains] together".

A third friend who did not want to be publicly identified said Long stopped communicating two years ago but said the shooting was unlike him.

Long was deployed to Afghanistan from November 2010 through June 2011.

Housley is the niece of actress Tamera Mowry-Housley and her husband Adam Housley, a former Fox News reporter.

"It looked like he knew what he was doing", Whitler told KABC-TV.

Long opened fire seemingly at random inside the Western-themed bar at about 11:30 p.m., using a.45 caliber Glock handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Authorities have no motive yet. According to locals, Borderline Bar & Grill was a gathering place for people who loved country music.

"Typically, if you go to a bar, if you're going to be drinking", you would leave your gun at home, Kuredjian said.

Sgt. Eric Buschow, of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, said that "multiple fatalities" had been confirmed. "He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero; he went in to save lives, to save other people". Helus died while being treated at an area hospital several hours after he was shot, Dean said.

Thirteen people died, including a sheriff's deputy and the suspected shooter.

"We do live in a scary time where we do have to be more cautious, but I also think we can't stop living our lives because things like this are happening", Jacksonville resident Cada White said.

He said he and others smashed their way out of the bar onto a balcony and then jumped down to safety.

Hanson described Long as an introvert and said he was "dumbfounded" by the massacre. He didn't come home last night. Gunshots were heard even as officers were responding to the incident.

- Long first shot a security guard outside the bar, went inside and then shot more security personnel and employees before opening fire on patrons. Earlier he had described it as "a horrific scene in there".

The Marine Corps said Long earned several awards, including a Combat Action Ribbon and a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. But a mental health professional who spoke with Long said he did not believe Long needed to be hospitalized.

Under the name "doorkicker03", Long said he was an infantry machine gunner while in the Marine Corps for 4½ years, and was an instructor in Okinawa in Japan.

A man holds his head in his hands outside the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, following the shooting. Investigators will examine that evidence along with any surveillance or witness video and Long's digital footprint in order to "paint a picture" of his state of mind, the Federal Bureau of Investigation official said. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. "I just started hearing these big pops". A sheriff's deputy, 12 attendees and the gunmen were killed.

California Lutheran University canceled classes Thursday following the shooting.

Trump ordered the United States flag at the White House and other government buildings to be flown at half-staff.

Several of the survivors said they were also at the outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas previous year when a gunman in a high-rise hotel killed 58 people.
