Diablo: Immortal's Reveal Was an Unnecessary Mess

Blizzard denies pulling Diablo 4 announcement from BlizzCon 2018

Blizzard denies pulling Diablo 4 announcement from BlizzCon 2018

It's worth noting that Diablo Immortal isn't the only mobile property from Blizzard, with the company having already ported games like Hearthstone to mobile. It certainly felt like the main course was missing from dinner after Diablo: Immortal was given top billing at BlizzCon, but it's a claim Blizzard denies - which is the equivalent of being thrown a rope to pull yourself out of quicksand, but instead choosing to light the rope on fire.

"I mean, I wouldn't rule anything out, but we don't have any plans around [Warcraft IV] at this point", Pete Stilwell, Blizzard's senior producer, told GameSpot. This wording implies Activision Blizzard will go the in-game microtransaction route, and since that is a prominent fear among Diablo Immortal's critics (and a major cause of the criticism), we must call into question the veracity of this prediction. It's literally gutting the game to shape it around the mobile monetization model. We're only going to release the game when we feel like it is meeting the community's very high standards.

And we still don't know.

So, unless Blizzard is hiding some kind of surprise announcement in the coming months, Reforged is not a back-door way of announcing new Warcraft games for the moment.

The backlash is, to a degree, an anger I understand.

Hot on the heels of its Diablo Immortal announcement, Blizzard has confirmed it has mobile projects in the works for multiple franchises. Though, notably, there was a time when Diablo 3 coming to console sounded like a bad idea to this same community, and it ended up being one of the best places to play it.

The most discouraging part of the statement for fans who won't be playing the mobile games is where Adham says that "we have many of our best developers now working on new mobile titles". Forcing developers to rush the timeline of a game never helps anything, but those studios have proved even just an unfinished logo is enough. "With their incredible passion for Diablo and proven mobile expertise, the development team has spawned an ultra-responsive and breathtakingly attractive mobile game, and we can't wait for players to get their hands on it".
