Arsenal suffered an injury blow during their Europa League tie against Sporting on Thursday as Danny Welbeck was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

Welbeck was quickly surrounded by his team-mates, with Matteo Guendouzi visibly shocked by the incident, before receiving oxygen and being carried from the pitch.

"For me, football is about levels and, if you don´t defend properly and you don´t do the basics well enough, high-level players and high-level teams normally punish you and that was the case tonight", Gerrard told the Rangers website.

Emery said after the game: "Lichtsteiner's injury changed our idea on the match, we wanted to change for Eddie Nketiah and give another chance for the striker".

"Danny is a very good person, his commitment with us is very big". He's helped us with his behaviour, with his quality and his capacity.

"It's a very big injury for him, for us, for all people who like and love him as a person".

The result kept Unai Emery's men top of Group G with 10points, while Sporting have seven.

He added: "Our mind is to be first in the group". Then every match we want the best performance from every player.

"But when he had the injury we needed to play with a right-back which was the reason we played with Ainsley [Maitland-Niles]".

Steven Gerrard´s Rangers saw their 11-game unbeaten run in this year´s Europa League come to a dramatic end as they threw away the lead three times in a 4-3 defeat at Spartak Moscow.

"We were aware of the opponent's quality but we, knowing our capacity and being creative and aggressive with and without ball, could try to surprise here".
