More protection United Nations says Earth’s ozone layer is healing

In parts of the stratosphere, where most of the ozone is found, the layer has recovered at a rate of 1-3% per decade since 2000, the authors state.

The UN had already hailed the success of the Protocol but the report said it was the first time that there were emerging indications that the Antarctic ozone hole had diminished in size and depth since 2000.

A United Nations study has revealed that the ozone layer is slowly recovering, and is even expected to be fully repaired by the 2060s.

Referring to projected rates, the report says the northern hemisphere and mid-latitude ozone is "scheduled to heal completely by the 2030s followed by the southern hemisphere in the 2050s and polar regions by 2060".

Amid all the bad news about the environment there is one chink of light - the Earth's ozone layer is healing, scientists say.

But in 1987, countries around the world agreed in the Montreal Protocol to phase out CFCs and businesses came up with replacements.

NASA's Paul Newman, joint chairman of the report, said that two thirds of the ozone would have been destroyed by 2065 had the measures not been implemented. The Kigali Amendment to the Protocol, made in 2016, deals with phasing down the use of other substances like HFCs which are not ozone-depleting but are quite damaging for the climate due to its high global warming potential.

While climate change concerns continue to mount, a new United Nations-backed report delivered a positive environmental update: Earth's ozone layer is finally healing.

"We are only at a point where recovery may have started", Toon said, pointing to some ozone measurements that haven't increased yet.

Recent reports have found that emissions of a banned CFC are increasing in China - something the Chinese government has vowed to crack down on.

The Protocol is set to be strengthened in 2019 with the ratification of the Kigali Amendment which calls for the future use of powerful climate-warming gases in refrigerators, air conditioners and related products to be slashed.

The Protocol was in response to the revelation that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances - used in aerosols, cooling and refrigeration systems, and many other items - were tearing a hole in the ozone layer and allowing unsafe ultraviolet radiation to flood through.

"The Montreal protocol is one of the most successful multilateral agreements in history for a reason", said Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment.

So a healed ozone layer will worsen man-made climate change there a bit, Newman said.

"I don't think we can do a victory lap until 2060", Newman said.
