It was the third mass shooting in the United States in under two weeks, six days after the death of two women at a yoga class in Tallahassee, Florida and 12 days after a gunman killed 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, shouting "All Jews must die". Somewhere between 10 and 15 more were injured. "I don't know the condition of the victims but my understanding is there are a number (of) wounded included a local deputy ... all of the victims have been transported to hospitals", Fox told CNN on the phone. We will continue updating this story as more information becomes available.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant".

"It's there", Mr Coffman told CNN. The shooter fired upon the police officers when they entered the bar. He was killed in a shootout with the gunman.

The intervention at the crowded venue late on Wednesday night was the final act of a 29-year career in law enforcement for Sergeant Helus, who was due to retire next year.

"I told my wife, 'Just be polite to him. There's a fence right there so I said, 'Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can, and I followed them over". He leaves a wife and son.

"Cody was the big brother that my kids need", he said, fighting through tears.

Cody had just turned 22, and was in the process of talking to recruiters so he could join the Army, Coffman said.

Victims were forced to hide in bathrooms and attic crawlspaces as the shooting unfolded, while armed cops descended on the scene. She had earlier been reported missing by friends and family.

California Lutheran University, located about 8 kilometres from the bar, cancelled classes on Thursday, while Pepperdine University, about 32 kilometres away, planned a prayer service. Some men ran toward them and said the gunman was coming.

Authorities later identified the gunman as Ian David Long, 28, a Marine veteran, who was found dead inside after apparently killing himself. Its website listed Wednesday's event as college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.

"Our hearts are broken".

Chandler Gunn, 23, of Newberry Park called a friend who works at the bar who was also at the Route 91 shooting in Vegas. Many of those at the bar were regulars, she said. She didn't want her name used, to protect her privacy.

"Unfortunately our young people, people at nightclubs, have learned that this may happen, and they think about that. You just don't expect it to happen in Thousand Oaks".

"I tried to get as many people to cover as I could", Knapp said. Dean said Helus undoubtedly saved lives by going in to confront the gunman. "It's too frequent an occurrence and it hurts every time, but it's never hurt like this before". "It's been a part of my political activism". "Knowing Cody, I'm afraid that's what he did".

"There's not a better place for us to be", Bayless said.
