U.S. President Donald Trump gets into a heated exchange with CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta as NBC correspondent Peter Alexander looks on during a post-election press conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington DC on Nove

Acosta asked Trump if he thought he had "demonized" migrants by calling the group an "invasion". They're hundreds and hundreds of miles away. "CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them". She went on to say that she, in general, doesn't like when men touch her without permission, but said what Acosta did was not assault.

In a tweet Mr Acosta says he was stopped by the Secret Service when he tried to re-enter the White House on Wednesday evening. "I'm telling you what the law is".

Acosta's press pass which he uses to gain access to the White House was suspended today, hours after a confrontation with Trump.

Wallace appeared on Fox News host Dana Perino's afternoon program where he called Acosta's approach more of an argument than a question.

The action was the first time the White House had explicitly banned a reporter, but it isn't a new exercise for Trump, whose campaign in 2016 denied credentials to a host of reporters and some news organizations, including The Washington Post, Politico and the Huffington Post, after coverage it disliked. The manipulation vaguely makes the point of incidental contact look more forceful than it was.

No one is suggesting that Acosta threatened President Donald Trump.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders has been accused of "doctoring" the footage of the incident between CNN's Jim Acosta, who has had his White House pass revoked, and a female intern.

Acosta responded that Sanders' description of events was "a lie".

The intern attempted to grab the microphone from Acosta, who nevertheless tried to shout out one last question. "He held on to the microphone as she reached for it".

After asking a follow up question, Acosta let go of the mic. He criticized NBC's Peter Alexander for backing Acosta. "It's ridiculous for anyone to suggest he did". "We will not tolerate the inappropriate behavior clearly documented in this video", Sanders tweeted to accompany the allegedly doctored video.

In a three-and-a-half minute segment interviewing Acosta on the night that his credentials were revoked, not once did CNN play the part of the video which shows Acosta's treatment of the intern.

In a later tweet, Sanders said the White House stood by its decision.

The incident comes amid an atmosphere of heightened hostility toward the media in the U.S. In late October, CNN was targeted with explosive devices sent through the mail. "This unprecedented decision is a threat to our democracy and the country deserves better", CNN said.

"I worked with Jim @Acosta at CNN". "The way you treat Sarah Huckabee [Sanders] is terrible".

Acosta has served as a White House correspondent for CNN since 2013 when he covered the Obama administration.

The White House News Photographers Association's president Whitney Shefte issued a statement expressing outrage that Sanders "may have shared a manipulated video". "It's deceptive, unsafe and unethical. The lies never end", Dornic wrote on Twitter. "As long as @realdonaldtrump is our President, I'm not taking a day off". Trump has called the move an "invasion", although the group is nowhere near the United States border.

The official Twitter account posted a statement which read: "This President's ongoing attacks on the press have gone too far".
