157,000 People Evacuated As Fires Burn in Northern, Southern California

Evacuations Ordered in Butte County California as the Camp Fire Expands

Residents of the beachside city of Malibu have been ordered to evacuate as three fast-moving wildfires raged in California on Friday morning, including one that also spurred the evacuation of 75,000 homes near a city that was still reeling from a mass shooting. Jerry Brown is out of the state.

Thick grey smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away. Others flooded Twitter with messages about missing family members. Those fires were eventually contained, but a new inferno which sparked up in Plumas National Forest this week has devastated tens of thousands of acres already, and it's turned the town of Paradise, California, into a hellscape.

One manager of a mobile home park said her husband had struggled to alert as many residents as possible to the fire, hammering on doors and screaming for people to leave.

The blaze began early on Thursday and had charred 20,000 acres (8,093 hectares) by 8 pm (11.00 pm ET), said Cal Fire spokesman Rick Carhart.

Among them was Kim Curtis, who was searching for her grandmother, who told family at 8 a.m. Thursday that she would flee her Paradise home in her Buick with her cat.

Many abandoned their cars on the side of the road, fleeing on foot.

At one point a tree branch fell on his vehicle, smashing his windshield and denting the front of his auto and he tied to navigate his way to safety in the pitch-black darkness. Fire officials said it could take days to figure out how many people died. The first firefighters to arrive found some 10-15 acres burning. Gusts have reached speeds of 65 miles per hour.

And officials cautioned that the situation could still change rapidly.

There was little time for the 27,000 people who live in Paradise to evacuate.

The hospital's parent company could not be reached for comment. Residents awoke to the stench of smoke and the morning horizon drenched in an ashen-orange that was hard to see or drive through, hindering evacuations.

Earlier, at 8 p.m., the Butte County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for the area on both sides of Oro Chico Highway from Durham Dayton north to Estates Drive. More than 30,000 people had been evacuated. "People were abandoning their cars and running with their babies and kids".

Schools in the county would be closed on Friday.

His wife was trying the four roads that lead out of Paradise. Firefighters were able to stop the fire at the edge of the city, where evacuation orders remained in place Friday, Cal Fire Cpt.

"Right now, Mother Nature is in charge", spokesman Bryce Bennett told the Bee. Yellow areas represent the fire perimeter.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Trey Epsy said crews created "water curtains" between homes to salvage the ones they could.

A second Southern California wildfire is also burning just northwest of the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. Wind gusts of 50 miles per hour were expected in many locations.

Acting California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area and requested a federal emergency declaration, saying that high winds and dry brush presented ongoing danger.

A red flag warning is in effect in the area, meaning Thursday will bring 20-to-40-mph winds and low humidity that threaten to spread the wildfire.

California has experienced debilitating fires of unprecedented regularity in the past few years.
