Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

Among those the White House is considering to serve as Sessions' permanent replacement is former New Jersey governor and Trump supporter Chris Christie.

Rally organizers are demanding that Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation because he has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and can not be allowed to remain in charge of it.

"Matt Whitaker - I don't know Matt Whitaker", Trump said.

Protests like the one in Rock Hill were scheduled to take place across the USA, according to the movement's website.

That set off immediate alarm bells: Whitaker has been overtly critical of the broad scope granted to Mueller's team to probe beyond allegations Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in 2016, into other ties between Trump, his family and aides, and Russian Federation - an investigation the president calls a "witch hunt".

Mueller is also probing possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, allegations both sides have repeatedly denied.

Those included an op-ed article in which he said Mueller would be straying outside his mandate if he investigated Trump family finances and a radio interview in which he maintained there was no evidence of collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

They also waved American flags and banners emblazoned with slogans such as "Hands Off Mueller", as they shuffled down Seventh Avenue from Times Square to voice their aversion for Whitaker, a Trump loyalist.

Critics of the Mueller probe, including Whitaker, argue it has gone too far.

Mueller's prosecutors have already laid out detailed allegations of how Russian Federation sought to manipulate Americans through social media, break into state voting systems and hack the email accounts of Democratic committees and party leaders. "It is imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded". The president has called Mueller's investigation a "witch-hunt" and criticized Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing Mueller's probe. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been overseeing it because of Sessions's recusal.

"People ... across this country gathered today to say ..."

"I think it seems wildly inappropriate to most of us that the president would appoint someone who has such a strong opinion on an investigation on him", said Mindie Riley, a Bethlehem resident who helped organize the rally.

Valparaiso City Councilman Robert Cotton, D-2nd, said the Mueller investigation needs to be protected.

Whitaker was appointed to the post by President George W. Bush in 2004 and later confirmed.

The move took place shortly after a press conference Trump gave at the White House during which he said Sessions' fate was under consideration.
