'She Has Earned This': Trump Praises Pelosi, Warns Democrats

Democrats will now control the US House of Representatives and Republicans have increased their majority in the US Senate. This serves up an additional check on what the new but narrow Democratic majority will be able to do legislatively in the next two years.

However, the party will now head House committees that can investigate the president's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and possible links between his 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation.

Trump says Tuesday's "Big Win" for Republicans was achieved "all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!" Many Trump supporters already believe investigations into him have gone too far, and a string of new subpoenas could end up alienating voters. The new, split reality that Washington woke up to on Wednesday poses stark challenges for the White House, but also presents some political opportunities. The majority party in the House controls nearly all of the subpoena power and other investigative tools.

But just a few days after the election, many Democrats seem not to have gotten the message. Democrats, emboldened by their victory and rising momentum, feel confident they can withstand the White House assaults in order to weaken the president before his re-election bid kicks into high gear.

Financial markets often favor Washington gridlock because it preserves the status quo and reduces uncertainty, even though many in the market this time around had been hoping for a continuation of the Republican agenda. Stock futures pointed to a triple-digit gain for the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Wednesday. His take-no-prisoners approach troubled many Republicans seeking to appeal to moderate voters in suburban House districts, but Trump prioritized base voters in the deep-red states that could determine the fate of the Senate.

Democrats have taken back the House.

Scott Bomboy is editor in chief of the National Constitution Center.

With Democrats winning a House majority in the midterms, they now control the body with the power to impeach the president - a possibility that came up again and again in his first two years in office.

"Democrats will lower healthcare costs and prescription drug prices for seniors and families across America", Pelosi vowed.

Trump himself will likely get involved, assigning derogatory nicknames while savaging them on Twitter, the aide said.

Foreign policy has been an area that Trump has approached in a very personal way, sometimes antagonizing allies such as Canada while making what critics see as unduly warm overtures to traditional rivals or foes.

In the Senate, Democrats were facing an uphill battle because they were defending 26 races, while just nine Republican seats were up for grabs.

Also, Democratic leaders in the House through committee positions can conduct investigations into the conduct of government officials, including the use of subpoenas to get documents, the ability to compel witnesses to testify, and the holding of witnesses in contempt for not testifying or providing information.

When the new Congress sits in early January, it will look quite a bit different to the president.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., a Marine who recruited other veterans to run, said Democrats "need someone who can bring the party back together, someone who can be focused on the future and someone who is dedicated to supporting the next generation of leaders".

In Tennessee, the GOP held Bob Corker's open seat, which will be filled by Republican Marsha Blackburn. Trump's aggressive campaign blitz, which paid off in some key victories, suggests he is likely to continue leaning into the fray.

Even after Democrats seized the House of Representatives on Tuesday, the reality show-host-turned-president failed to respond with humility.

The Democrats elected are also younger, more racially diverse and include more women.

Women also reached a record number in the Senate.

It could have been a much bigger night for Democrats, who suffered stinging losses in OH and in Florida, where Trump-backed Republican Ron DeSantis ended Democrat Andrew Gillum's bid to become the state's first African-American governor. Andrew Gillum lost to Republican DeSantis in his quest to become Florida's first black governor.
