Boeing Jet Crash-Lands At Guyana Airport, 6 Injured: Minister

In July 2011, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft belonging to Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines crashed at Cheddi Jagan after landing too far down the runway and running out of braking space, injuring several people.

Six people are reportedly injured after a Toronto-bound flight made an emergency landing in Guyana, according to airline officials.

The Boeing 757 aircraft with 118 adults and two infants on board was forced to return to the CJIA minutes after its departure for Canada because of technical difficulties and over ran the airstrip on the emergency landing.

That included 82 Canadians, one American, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian.

All passengers on board survived and six people suffered only minor injuries.

About 20 minutes into the flight, the pilot indicated the plane was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a Friday morning news conference.

But it overshot the runway and ended up on the grass.

The plane barrelled through a chain-link fence before finally coming to a halt at the top of an embankment, Bedessee said. However, he noted that the extended runway, though not opened at the time, served to cushion the impact. A spokesman said consular assistance would be available to those who needed it.

Amid an investigation into what caused a brand-new 737 Max jet to crash in Indonesia, another jet produced by USA aerospace and defense company Boeing crash landed in Guyana.

"They are all stable and are being looked at", Patterson said, adding that all the passengers and crew on board had been accounted for with "no reports of any broken bones or such".
