On Friday, the AQI was recorded in the severe category at 426.

The period following Diwali past year saw hospitals inundatedwith people suffering the effects of air pollution.

Risky levels of smog shrouded Delhi and surrounding areas on Thursday after revelers flouted a ban on fireworks - especially firecrackers - to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali. This air will seriously affect those with ailments, according to a SAFAR advisory.

At Dhirpur, the AQI was 724 at 8:30 am, while in Mathura Road area it dipped to "very poor" category at 625.

In 2016, Diwali festivities raised pollution levels to their highest in almost two decades - forcing the closure of schools and other emergency measures.

The air quality index used by the embassy is a combined measure of poisonous gases and fine airborne particles.

While many residents and green activists voiced their helplessness at the violation of the Supreme Court's 8-10pm time limit of bursting firecrackers and expressed anguish, doctors advised people to stay indoors, use N-99 masks and not venture out.

Giving a break up of different areas, the CPCB said in Pritampura, the PM10 and PM2.5 levels was 831 and 990 respectively this year, while last year the PM10 and PM2.5 was recorded at 677 and 690 respectively.

After a slight improvement on Diwali, Delhi's pollution level skyrockets to "severe" levels on Thursday midnight.

The overall air quality index or AQI was 10 times the safe limit - AQI above 500 falls in the "severe-plus emergency" category, according to the government-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Protection Authority said it was closely monitoring the situation and if the pollution shows an increasing trend then emergency measures will be imposed in the national capital.

Twenty three areas in Delhi recorded "severe" air quality while eight recorded "very poor" quality air, according to Central Pollution Control Board.

Many others said the ceaseless bursting of firecrackers on Diwali night in violation of the court directive has highlighted the difficulties faced by government agencies in enforcing orders when laws are routinely flouted and accentuated the "large gap" between the law and the capacity to enforce it. However, reports have claimed that Delhi is not the most polluted city in the country.
