As investigators worked to figure out what set him off, President Donald Trump blamed mental illness, describing the gunman as "a very sick puppy" who had "a lot of problems".

Upon hearing the gunshots, he immediately grabbed people around him and brought them to the ground for cover.

The mother of a young man who survived last year's gun massacre in Las Vegas only to be killed by another gunman in a California bar this week has made an impassioned plea for gun control.

Telemachus "Tel" Orfanos, 27, escaped the deadliest mass shooting in US history only to be killed by a fellow veteran at a bar in his hometown Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Wednesday.

The incident happened in April, when yelling and loud banging noises coming from the home Long shared with his mother prompted a next-door neighbor to call authorities.

"I literally feared for myself around him", Colell said in an interview.

"I saw him point to the back of the cash register ... and he just kept firing".

Thousand Oaks, located 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, is frequently named one of the safest cities in the country.

At the vigil, hundreds joined in song inside the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza while an overflow crowd gathered outside to remember those who were lost.

The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since 17 classmates and teachers were gunned down at a Parkland, Florida school nine months ago.
