Trump Rejects His Government's Warning of Climate Change Costs

President Trump visits wildfire damage

US President Donald Trump has cast doubt on a report by his own government warning of devastating effects from climate change.

It said warming-charged extremes "have already become more frequent, intense, widespread or of long duration".

A new federal report says US efforts to address climate change have expanded but not enough to stave off substantial damage to the economy, environment and human health. Asked about severe economic impacts, he said, "I don't believe it".

President Trump has played lip service to the importance of maintaining America's "clean air" and "clean water" since assuming office, but his administration has focused on rolling back key Obama-era environmental policies, scaling back federal research into climate change, and boosting the fortunes of America's ailing coal industry.

Trump said other countries must take measures to cut their emissions.

Since becoming president in 2016, he has pulled the United States out of the worldwide Paris Agreement on attempting to bring down global temperatures, and torn up a raft of environmental protection laws, saying the USA economy needs the boost.

After taking office he announced the USA would withdraw from the Paris climate change agreement, which commits another 187 other countries to keeping rising global temperatures "well below" 2C above pre-industrial levels. Due to United Nations rules, he can not quit the deal until after the 2020 presidential election. "If we're clean, but every other place on earth is dirty, that's not so good", Trump said.

United States carbon emissions from industry slipped 2.7 percent previous year as coal plants shut and use of natural gas and renewable energy rose.

Speaking on Monday after the launch of the report on Friday, President Trump dismissed its conclusions. US output of crude oil is already the highest in the world, above Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation.

The Fourth National Climate Assessment outlines the potential impacts of climate change across every sector of American society.

The report warned of massive economic losses if carbon emissions continue to feed climate change unchecked.

The report supplements a study issued past year that concluded humans are the main driver of global warming and warned of catastrophic effects to the planet.
