AWS launches 'Ground Station-as-a-service' for satellite industry

Amazon Web Services announces its own custom-designed ARM server processor

"Satellite data is incredibly useful for building a wide range of important applications, but it is super-complex and expensive to build and operate the infrastructure needed to do so". It also offers additional ROS packages that connect to AWS services, making it easier to build robots, add intelligent functions, simulate and test robotics applications, and manage and update fleets of robots.

With this new service, AWS will provide ground antennas through their existing network of worldwide availability zones, as well as data processing services to simplify the entire data retrieval and processing process for satellite companies, or for others who consume the satellite data. "Spire has built one of the world's largest ground station networks ... and now imagine that Amazon does all of that and the only thing that Spire does is rents capacity on the ground station".

Amazon said the capability would be available to AWS customers in the government or regulated industries, a key area for the company as it bids for a $10 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Lastly, AWS IoT Greengrass Connectors is a new feature for AWS IoT Greengrass that enables web and mobile developers to connect to third-party apps such as ServiceNow for service management and Splunk for log analytics.

Working with Lockheed's antenna, AWS Ground Station services will piece together satellite data from around the globe and reconstruct it into image data, significantly speeding up the process, according to Lockheed's Executive Vice President of Space Systems, Rick Ambrose. The service, Jassy hopes, will allow customers to download data from satellites into AWS Global Infrastructure Regions more easily and inexpensively. The Amazon.com company has termed the services as the world's first "fully-managed ground station as-a-service". These firms have reportedly signed up for AWS Ground Station.

"With this new system, the image will be crystal clear and this will be crucial for application in autonomous vehicles", Scott said.

Last month, AWS announced plans to bring its data centres to South Africa, opening an infrastructure region in SA in the first half of 2020.

Amazon's space-age service will take advantage of a strategic collaboration with Lockheed Martin to talk to the thousands of satellites in Low Earth Orbit.

Lockheed Martin Verge is now available in private beta for customers with satellites that support S-band frequencies and can downlink in the Denver, Colorado area. The company will be using Lockheed Martin's low-priced, ground-based antennas to capture satellite data. They can get access to a ground station on short notice to handle a special event such as severe weather, a natural disaster, or a sporting event.
