JeepThe 2019 Jeep Gladiator

The Gladiator, Jeep's long-awaited Wrangler-based ute, has finally made its debut at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show. Jeep has shaken up the trim levels from what's available in the Wrangler models.

Except it's more than just a four-door Wrangler with an open bed-much more. As seen in many current pickups, the Gladiator will have a three-piece rear window with a power-operated middle pane that will slide to the driver's side. Trucks like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado and long-time market favorite, the Toyota Tacoma, are created to appeal to buyers looking for something more fun and efficient than a massive full-size pickup. This heroic sounding model, according to Jeep themselves, is their most capable mid-size offering. Pricing has yet to be announced however we expect the base price to hover the $40k mark. But the midsized segment has grown rapidly during the past few months and FCA is eager to re-enter the segment.

And Jeep isn't pulling punches. That's right, the real name is Gladiator, not the rumored Scrambler badge. Jeep has built a variety of pickup trucks since the 1940s.

The Jeep Gladiator gets a total of 80 safety and convenience features. But is there perhaps another reason Jeep is using a model name last affixed to a version of the Wagoneer?

The Wrangler, designed for serious off-road driving, is already engineered like a truck rather than like a tall auto, as most SUVs are these days. The top of the keystone-shaped grille is gently swept back to enhance aerodynamics.

Jeep has confirmed four trim lines, Sport, Sport S, Overland and rugged Rubicon.

The Gladiator's bed will be available with a factory-applied bedliner, cargo partitions, a power outlet, and a tonneau cover-all for an extra cost, of course. With them and depending on specs, the Gladiator can be equipped with Command-Trac of hardcore Rock-Trac 4×4 systems, third-generation Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential, electronic sway-bar disconnect, and 33-inch off-road tires. Under the bed is a full-size spare wheel well that can take up to a 35-inch tyre.

A four-bolt design at the top of the windscreen's frame allows for the screen to fold down, with a header bar connecting the A-pillars and staying in place. A spray-in liner and tonneau cover are available as options in the United States and underneath the tray is space for a full-size (up to 35-inch) tyre. The seatbacks also fold flat and there is another storage area between the rear of the cab and the seatbacks. The doors are removable, and the tools are included.

All Gladiators feature body-color sport bars, which are welded to the body and feature integrated grab handles for front occupants. Engine stop/start and push-button start are both standard. Cloth or leather-contoured seats feature accent stitching and adjustable bolster and lumbar support. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are optional.

Its interiors are seen with a standard touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto besides smartphone connectivity.
