Former rugby player Chris Dawson arrested in cold case made famous by podcast

Queensland Police confirmed to 10 daily a man was arrested on Wednesday on the Gold Coast.

Chris Dawson was arrested in the 1982 disappearance of his wife Lynette Dawson.

Mr Dawson will face a NSW court later this week.

10 News First reporter Matthew Howard reported that he would instead be extradited on Thursday.

After his wife's disappearance he moved one of his 16-year-old pupils into his house and they would later marry.

Comm. Fuller said two additional witness statements had been taken since April, but would not comment on the significance of that evidence.

NSW police had amassed "an enormous amount of evidence".

An Australian man has been arrested after a podcast shed new light on the disappearance of his wife 36 years ago.

First The Teacher's Pet podcast went viral in Australia and across the globen.

Dawson's disappearance has remained unsolved for 37 years.

In September investigators spent nearly a week digging up the Dawsons' former Bayview home but found no human remains and no significant clues. Image: AAP Police remained at the home for a week.

A dig at the former family home in Sydney earlier this year failed to turn up any new evidence.

Two separate inquests have recommended for murder charges to be laid against a "known person".

Earlier this week, the ODPP provided advice to police, and following further inquiries, NSW Police detectives applied for an arrest warrant before travelling to Queensland. The body of Lyn, then 33 and a mother of two, has never been found.

He has said that she abandoned the family for a religious group, the BBC reported.

Fuller said authorities have not located Dawson's body, and that finding her remains is "not crucial to finalising the matter", but maintained "we certainly won't give up on that search".

Mr Fuller said: "That information enabled New South Wales Police to get an arrest warrant for a 70-year-old man now living in Queensland".

After some deliberation, magistrate Dennis Kinsella decided the court did not have the power to grant bail due to the case being in NSW.

After being extradited, he is today expected to appear in a Parramatta court.

Speaking to Studio 10 on Wednesday, Lynette Dawson's brother Greg Simms revealed his family was "over the moon" about the arrest. "That makes it very weak", he said.

Former Cromer High School teacher Dawson - the subject of popular podcast The Teacher's Pet - was taken to Southport where he will be charged, with NSW detectives to seek an extradition.

The magistrate said the crown alleged domestic violence allegations against Mr Dawson would be raised in evidence, as well as evidence from the woman involved in the affair - Mr Dawson's former student Joanne Curtis. She became the family's babysitter and months later the pair became involved in a sexual relationship.

Dawson had always been a suspect after wife Lyn vanished from Sydney's northern beaches in January 1982.

On the weekend of January 9, 1982, Lyn disappeared.
